The Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency and the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council is a recognized member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Facts About DETC
The Distance Education and Training Council is the leading advocate of quality distance education in America. The Distance and Training Council (DETC), a non-profit educational association located in Washington, D.C., serves as a clearinghouse of information about the field of distance education and conducts a nationally recognized accrediting agency called the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council.

The DETC was founded in 1926 and has continued in its unique role for more than 80 years, promoting sound education and good business practices in the distance education field. The nine member Accrediting Commission was established in 1955; shortly thereafter it gained the approval of the U.S. Department of Education as the “nationally recognized accrediting agency” for distance education institutions. The Accrediting Commission is also recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Presently there are 92-distance study institutions located around the world accredited by the DETC’s Accrediting Commission. The opportunity to apply for accreditation is open to private and public distance education institutions, both at the degree (Associates through First Professional degree) and non-degree levels. Institutions which have been reviewed by the Commission have voluntarily made an intensive study of their own operations, opened their doors to thorough inspection by a qualified examining committee, and supplied all information required by the Accrediting Commission.

For a directory of accredited institutions, DETC publications, and more information on distance education, please visit our web site at www.detc.org.

What is the first step to obtaining my degree?
Submit your application for admissions.

How do I apply?
Complete the application found in the Columbia Southern University Information Catalogue (last page) or submit an online application.

What information do I need to submit with my application?
Along with your application include transcripts of prior academic credits earned (copies will suffice for evaluative purposes). Include military transcripts, if applicable (AARTS for Army, SMARTS for Navy/Marines). If you do not have student copies of your transcripts, request them for the appropriate university or college and have them sent directly to CSU. If you will not be submitting transcripts from a University or College, you must include proof of a high school diploma or GED. In addition, please include copies of your professional licenses as well as copies of professional certificates that list CEU’s awarded or classroom hours attended. Online applicants should fax (251-224-0540) their transcripts, etc. to the CSU Admission Department. Please be certain to fax both sides of transcripts, etc.

What happens next?
CSU will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of applicant materials including any prior academic credit. Within seven to ten days of receipt of your application, we will prepare a detailed Evaluation Report. This report will outline those courses we have determined you should take and those courses of which we have accepted transfer credit.

While there’s no obligation to enroll, you will experience first hand CSU’s quality service.

Can I do this program if I am overseas?
Absolutely. With CSU’s Online Format it is possible to complete your degree program from anywhere.

How much are the degree programs?
Undergraduate: $175 per credit hour
Graduate: $240 per credit hour

How does the CSU book grant work?
Textbooks are provided at no cost through the CSU Book Grant. Students who do not successfully complete a course will be responsible for the return/cost of the course textbook(s).

When can I enroll?
Start class when you are ready. With CSU Per Course Enrollment there are no predetermined semester or session dates you need to contend with. CSU sets the objectives, you set the schedule, and CSU’s faculty and staff provide the support you need to successfully complete your program.

Do I have to take the Orientation course?
Yes. CSU’s two-week Orientation course (1 credit hour) is required. Here’s why. This course will familiarize you with the process here at CSU, and our web orientation tools will enable you to become quickly comfortable with the virtual resource available to you. Additionally you will gain an understanding of CSU’s course structure, and policies and procedures.
